It's fair to say that pizza is not usually high on the list of foods for dieters. When trying to lose weight, most people are likely to avoid pizza completely, even if it's one of their favourite meals. But it doesn't necessarily have to be this way.

Although eating excessive amounts of pizza probably won't do your waistline any favours, it can still be enjoyed as part of your diet if you're careful. Here are some tips to help you cut the calories while still getting your pizza fix.

Ask about low-fat cheese

The cheese on a pizza is what makes up the majority of its calories because cheese is laden with fat. Some pizza restaurants have low-fat cheese in stock, so ask if it's available. It isn't always on the menu, or it might be hard to find, so don't be afraid to ask your waiter at the pizza restaurant, even if you don't see it listed.

Remove the cheese completely

The idea of a pizza without cheese may seem extremely odd to some people, and perhaps you don't even consider a cheese-less pizza real pizza at all. However, one of the earliest traditional pizzas, the marinara, is made without cheese and is still a classic dish served throughout Italy today.

To make your cheese-free pizza as delicious as possible, ask for a bit of extra sauce to counteract any dryness you might get without dairy. Add some tasty, flavour-packed toppings, and you might well find you don't even miss the cheese.

Share with others

One simple way to reduce the calories in your meal is to eat less. With pizza, this is easy, as it's practically made for sharing.

Order a single pizza between two instead of having one to yourself, and order some healthy sides like a large salad to round out the meal. You'll still get to eat pizza and you won't leave hungry, but you'll be consuming fewer calories overall.

Be sensible with toppings

Some toppings are just less healthy and more fattening than others. Instead of ordering a pizza covered with various processed meats, try just having one type of meat and adding lots of veggies to add more interesting flavours.

You could also just go full vegetarian, leaving out all meat in favour of plant-based toppings. The good thing about this is that you can order more toppings than you usually would without feeling guilty, so you can treat yourself to a fully loaded, filling pizza.
